"Piepenbrock Goes Green"
Piepenbrock groups the entirety of its ecological activities under the motto "Piepenbrock Goes Green", thus intensifying commitment to the environment. The guiding principle is the vision of CO2-neutral service and production. In the course of subsequent years, the company optimises its car fleet and designs services are increasingly environmentally friendly. Cleaning chemicals are used more and more sparingly and the use of environmentally compatible cleaning agents is ensured. Furthermore, digital applications, central archiving, the deployment of video conferences and intensified use of online tools for training courses and further education reduce the use of paper and transport routes.

1990

Creation of the position of Environmental Officer
Piepenbrock creates the position of 'Environmental Officer'. The Environmental Officer chairs the quarterly meetings of recently founded environmental protection task force and bundles its activities. In doing so, Piepenbrock becomes a pioneer in the entire cleaning industry.

First sustainability successes
Piepenbrock achieves first sustainability successes. This enables the company to reduce the deployment of chemicals and cleaning agents by 50%. The separation of waste and waste recycling are driven forward in the entire company.

Planol develops environmentally friendly cleaning agents in test tubes.

Environmentally compatible production at Planol
Planol, a subsidiary of Piepenbrock, has been producing without phosphates, formaldehyde, chlorinated hydrocarbons and CFCs since 1990. The detergents that are used are biodegradable. Process improvements and the introduction of concentrates also reduce the amounts of waste and effluent.

Many employees came to the opening of the Piepenbrock cafeteria, the Casino.

Opening of the 'Casino'
In the Service Centre in Osnabrück, Piepenbrock employees officially open the first in-house cafeteria, the "Casino", with a seating capacity of 160. With immediate effect, employees can enjoy a freshly prepared lunch on the seventh floor. In doing so, Piepenbrock also promotes environmental thinking. For example, ready-made meals no longer have to be delivered in aluminium packaging, which used to generate large quantities of waste.

Protective goggles are part of the protective clothing for cleaning.

Expansion of environmental / health and safety file for cleaning agents
The environmental / health and safety file for cleaning agents is expanded.

1992

Publication of the environmental brochure "In Dialogue with the Environment"
Piepenbrock publishes the environmental brochure "In Dialogue with the Environment". It describes, for example, the consumption of toilet paper and cleaning agents in the company.

The Hermann Monument commemorates the Battle of the Teutoburg Forest (Varusschlacht).

Involvement in the Varus Society
Through the commitment of the Varus Society for the promotion of prehistoric and early-historical excavations in Osnabrück, Piepenbrock also promotes scientific projects in connection with the historic Battle of the Teutoburg Forest (Varusschlacht).

Sponsor of the foundation to promote the Dresden Semper opera house
Piepenbrock is actively involved in preserving and developing music and theatre and begins by sponsoring the foundation to promote the Dresden Semper opera house as well as the Berlin Konzerthaus. Even today, Piepenbrock is a sponsor of both institutions.

Piepenbrock gives the Arts Patronage Award to up-and-coming artists.

Award of the Piepenbrock Arts Patronage Award
The "Hartwig Piepenbrock Cultural Foundation" presents the Piepenbrock Arts Patronage Award for the first time to fine arts students of the University of Osnabrück and sponsors other projects at the university.

In order to provide the disadvantaged and people with disabilities with educational opportunities, Piepenbrock promotes non-profit educational institutes.

Training and further education for the underprivileged
Piepenbrock supports the Vallendar vocational training institution and sponsors training as a building inspector in the field of cleaning service. This non-profit institution, later renamed as 'CJD Vocational Training Institution Koblenz', concerns itself with the vocational reintegration of people with disabilities.

The forest region in Rheinshagen has been the property of Piepenbrock since 1995.

1995

Acquisition of the company forest
Piepenbrock purchases an area of forest in Rheinshagen, Brandenburg, which is returned to its original state as a functioning ecosystem by means of sustainable management. Its diverse types of landscape such as heathland, pine, oak and beech forests, flood plains and marshland make the area a habitat for numerous rare types of animal and plant. This means the forest is very important in maintaining biodiversity.

1995

Sponsoring of Brandenburg summer concerts
Piepenbrock sponsors the Brandenburg summer concerts for the first time. Within the framework of the famous series of events, between 30 and 36 classical concerts take place at different venues all over Brandenburg every year in the summer months. Both international artists who are otherwise only encountered in the concert halls of major cities and regional performers such as the Brandenburg State Orchestra from Frankfurt (Oder) or the Philharmonic Orchestra of the Cottbus State Theatre perform there. Piepenbrock continues the sponsoring until the year 2019.

Pilot project "Integratio"
Together with the Osnabrück administrative district, Piepenbrock starts the pilot project "Integratio". Their aim is to ensure sustained integration of the long-term unemployed and social welfare recipients in the labour market. In this connection, Piepenbrock enables "training on the job", providing services in private households, for participants with a limited employment contract liable to social insurance contributions.

With the "International Prize for Care Management", Piepenbrock honours special initiatives in the administration and management of institutions in the healthcare sector in Germany, Austria and Switzerland. The prize involves 10,000 deutschmarks.

Certification complying with DIN ISO 14001
Piepenbrock environment management is certified by TÜV Management Service GmbH according to the DIN standard EN ISO 14001. The standard is the most significant specification worldwide, defining what environment management in companies and other organisations should comprise and achieve.

Roads are under water during the Elbe flooding and Piepenbrock helps with working materials and vehicles.

2002

Help with the Elbe flooding
During the Elbe flooding, Piepenbrock branch offices provide assistance at several locations with working materials and vehicles. Piepenbrock employees fill sandbags and provide support in securing the city and customer property. The employees also donated approximately 13,500 euros for the victims of the flooding catastrophe. Company management topped up the amount to 27,000 euros. Over and above this, Piepenbrock and the Ecolab company donate material resources and services valued at 10,000 euros.

Implementation of a new waste separation system
The building services provider implements a waste separation system with 6-way separation and a recycling rate of 92% in the Service Centre in Osnabrück.

Setup of the health and safety management system "AMS Construction"
Piepenbrock sets up the health and safety management system "AMS Construction" of the construction industry professional liability insurance association. This is also successfully certified.

The Piepenbrock board of management is pleased at the opening of the Piepenbrock Technology Centre.

2009

Piepenbrock Technology Centre opening
Piepenbrock opens its Technology Centre at its headquarters in Osnabrück. On more than 200 square metres, the building services provider tests new methods and developments under real conditions. The rapidly interchangeable floor coverings enable comprehensive testing of the latest models available from machine manufacturers.

With the Plan International sponsorships, Piepenbrock brings a sparkle to children's eyes in Laos and Vietnam.

2010

Plan International sponsorships
Piepenbrock starts cooperation with Plan International Deutschland. Together, they promote the interests of destitute children in Laos. In order to improve the health, nutrition and education of adolescents in the province of Pak Tha, all Piepenbrock branch offices and the three affiliated companies LoeschPack, Hastamat and Planol provide sponsorship for a total of 63 children. Today, the group of companies maintains sponsorships for 70 children from Vietnam.

Piepenbrock starts the "Growth campaign". For customer orders as of a certain volume, the company plants a certain number of trees together with the customer in the company-owned forest. To date, more than 65,000 trees have already been planted.

Carbon-neutral packaging
The affiliated companies LoeschPack and Hastamat present their first CO2-neutral machine at Interpack, the world's leading trade fair for packaging machines, under the motto "carbon-neutral packaging". To achieve this, the two machine manufacturers calculate the carbon dioxide emissions caused during production and in the first year of operation. They balance this out by planting trees in the Piepenbrock company forest. They plant a tree for each metric tonne of carbon dioxide. One tree neutralises approximately a metric tonne of CO2 in the course of its life.

1. "Hartwig Piepenbrock DZNE award"
Together with the German Centre for Neurodegenerative Diseases (DZNE), Piepenbrock establishes the "Hartwig Piepenbrock DZNE Prize". Up to the present day, people whose work contributes to research into neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer's or dementia have received this award every two years. The prize involves 60,000 euros. The first award winner is Professor Konrad Beyreuther.

The building services provider founds the Sustainability Task Force. At monthly meetings, the members exchange views on sustainability issues, discuss new ideas and proposals, and define the sustainability objectives.

Piepenbrock publishes the first sustainability report in the industry sector in line with international standards. The building services provider uses this to illustrate how it harmonises profitability, environmental protection and social responsibility.

Dresden Marathon
Piepenbrock takes part in the Dresden Marathon for the first time and supports the event with sponsoring. A Piepenbrock running team consisting of employees, customers and partners also joins in. For every kilometre run, the company donates a euro to a good cause. Piepenbrock remains involved in the event every year within the framework of various sponsoring activities and with its own running team.

Santa Claus campaign
Trainees at the building services provider initiate the Santa Claus campaign. Since then, Piepenbrock employees have been able to purchase chocolate Santas every year on St. Nicholas Day, giving them to colleagues as gifts together with a Christmas greeting. The proceeds of the campaign are donated to a good cause.

Piepenbrock organises the first 'Health Day' in the Service Centre in Osnabrück. There, following health check-ups, the employees are given useful advice for a healthy life in lectures and workshops. The event still takes place regularly.

Piepenbrock signs the 'Charta der Vielfalt' (Charter of Diversity), underscoring its commitment to diversity in the company. The building services provider is also committed to equal treatment for all human beings. Piepenbrock also lives diversity in the company, employing 27,100  people from 128 countries and different religions, of different ages and sexual orientations.

The "apprentice project days" take place for the first time in the company forest in Rheinshagen. There, prospective building cleaners at Piepenbrock clear shrubs from sandy heathland. In doing so, they make an active contribution to nature conservation every year, ensuring that this rare habitat is preserved for the specific flora and fauna in the forest.

Implementation of 'Handshake' campaign
In the course of the 'Handshake' campaign, Piepenbrock holds a job application training day for students with German as a second language. Young people from the vocational training class for migrants at the Osnabrück Westerberg vocational college centre learn important rules for written job applications, creating correspondence and CVs and practising job interviews. They also find out more about the Piepenbrock company and the job of a building cleaner.

Publication of a Code of Conduct
The building services provider publishes a Code of Conduct. In this code, Piepenbrock undertakes in nine principles and rules that its business activity will comply with ethical and legal guidelines.

Piepenbrock is a member of B.A.U.M., the network for sustainable business.

B.A.U.M. Membership
Piepenbrock has been a member of B.A.U.M., the German Environmental Management Association, from 2012 to the end of 2020. The B.A.U.M. has been concerned with economic, ecological and social questions – the principles of sustainability – since 1984 . With more than 500 members, the B.A.U.M. is the largest corporate network for sustainable business in Europe.

The BMW i3 is among the electric models in the Piepenbrock fleet of vehicles.

First sustainable car in the car fleet
With immediate effect, the BMW i3 supplements the Piepenbrock car fleet. The vehicle has been developed to drive under electrical power on the crowded streets in and around major cities. To this end, the design engineers developed a new type of carbon passenger compartment and equipped the car with a 170 bhp electric motor.

Piepenbrock establishes the company's own academy. There, the company offers employees a wide variety of training courses to keep their level of knowledge up to date and consistently extend their skills.

Starting signal for 'Diversity Day'
Piepenbrock takes part in the 'Diversity Day' initiated by the 'Charta der Vielfalt' association, taking place for the first time this year. With various activities, companies and institutions from all over Germany focus on the topic of diversity. To symbolise the nations represented in the company, Piepenbrock releases 121 balloons. Since then, Piepenbrock takes part in Diversity Day with new ideas every year.

Piepenbrock and Plan International initiated the Piepenbrock Clean Water project for clean water in Laos.

Start of the project "Piepenbrock Clean Water"
Piepenbrock expands the cooperation with Plan International Deutschland association and starts the project "Piepenbrock Clean Water". The aim is to supply 13 villages in northern Laos with clean and essential drinking water. Up to 2016, donations of 100,000 euros are collected. This enables access to clean and safe drinking water for approximately 4,500 people in the Pak Tha region. Furthermore, toilets and washbasins suitable for children are provided for more than 600 girls and boys at seven schools.

Together with the German Centre for Neurodegenerative Diseases (DZNE), Piepenbrock awards the "Hartwig Piepenbrock DZNE Prize" for the second time. This year the award goes to Prof. Charles Weissmann and Prof. Adriano Aguzzi for their research into prions. To mark the company's 100th anniversary, Piepenbrock honours the award winners with 100,000 euros.

The building services provider organises a 'Sustainability Week' for the first time in the Service Centre in Osnabrück. In numerous lectures, workshops and active offerings, the employees concern themselves with ecological, social and economic issues and find out more about the sustainable commitment of the company. In the meantime, the Sustainability Week has established itself as an annual event.

Planting trees at customer sites
Piepenbrock plants trees not only in the company-owned forest in Rheinshagen, but also at customer sites. For example, Piepenbrock plants three horse chestnut trees in the Beutler Park together with the City of Dresden and its Lord Mayor, Dirk Hilbert. Piepenbrock also demonstrates its commitment to environmental protection and the growing partnership at Münster/Osnabrück Airport. Olaf Piepenbrock and the mayors of Münster and Osnabrück, Markus Lewe and Wolfgang Griesert, as well as the general manager of the airport, Prof. Gerd Stöwer, plant an oak tree there.

Piepenbrock receives the "Top National Employer" award for the first time, placing it among the best employers in Germany. The award is presented by the news magazine Focus, jointly with the career portal XING and employer ratings platform kununu. The distinction is given to the top three companies from 22 areas of industry, split into large and medium-sized companies. Among other big corporations in the service industry, Piepenbrock came second.

The German private institute for sustainability and economy awards Piepenbrock the "Trusted Sustainability" seal of approval. This certifies the holistically organised sustainability management of the group of companies that balances economic, ecological and social aspects. Piepenbrock completed the questionnaire in advance and was audited, whereby the individual issues regarding sustainability were checked on site and documented.

The Piepenbrock sustainability forum in the company forest is well received by the participants.

Event of the "Piepenbrock 'Sustainability Forum"
Piepenbrock organises the "Piepenbrock 'Sustainability Forum" in the company-owned forest for the first time. Together with customers and suppliers, the building services provider develops innovative concepts that will reconcile economic, ecological and social aspects. Here, the participants receive support from instructors such as Michael J. Kolodziej of the supervisory board at the 'dm' pharmacy chain and Fritz Brickwedde, former general secretary of the German Environment Foundation.

The Piepenbrock branch offices in Saxony are part of the Saxony environmental alliance.

Acceptance in Environmental Alliance of Saxony
Piepenbrock's branch offices in Saxony are included in the Environmental Alliance of Saxony. State Minister for the Environment, Frank Kupfer, acknowledges the fact that, by implementing the ISO 14001 management system, Piepenbrock has initiated fundamental environmental measures. The deployment of ecological cleaning agents and particularly low-emission vehicle models are decisive for inclusion.

Piepenbrock launches the first sustainability portal. This means that the sustainability report is now available in digital form instead of on paper. This takes the company another step closer to its vision of a CO2-neutral service.

For the first time, Piepenbrock publishes its CO2 balance for the company and the building services provider still creates it every year. In the process, Piepenbrock works together with First Climate, a worldwide leading project developer and service provider for climate protection and water.

Piepenbrock receives the northern region "Axia Award" from the consultancy firm Deloitte. This competition follows the guiding principle "Think sustainable, manage successfully". The award is given to the companies that best ensure sustainability, financing and brand image. First of all, the participants had to complete a questionnaire, then Deloitte consultants held personal discussions with the applicants.

A group of cyclists takes part in the Handicap Moves campaign, which Piepenbrock supports as jersey sponsor.

"Handicap Moves" campaign
Piepenbrock supports the fundraising tour "Handicap Moves" as a shirt sponsor with 1,500 euros. During the campaign, 26 racing bike enthusiasts cover 540 kilometres on their bikes – from Detmold to St. Joost in Wangerland. The proceeds are donated to the conAct e.V. relief organisation.

Development of ecological cleaning service
In the form of the 'ecological cleaning service', Piepenbrock develops an in-house instrument to check the environmental compatibility of cleaning services at the customer site. In a questionnaire, the environmental compatibility of services provided to date is examined on the basis of nine categories such as cleaning agents, dosing technology or cleaning procedures. Here, the actual status is compared with the desired requirements for ecological cleaning services and points are assigned accordingly.

Piepenbrock receives the "Pride 175" seal of approval. Here, the career trade fair "Sticks & Stones" and the Völklinger Kreis e. V. recognise companies and organisations who show a commitment towards equal opportunities and show appreciation of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transsexual/transgender and intersexed staff (LGBTI). In addition, Piepenbrock receives two bonus stars for its activities with respect to equal opportunities for LGBTI employees and its opposition to homophobia.

This year, the "Hartwig Piepenbrock DZNE Prize" goes to the British scientist John Hardy. The professor for neuroscience at the University College London gained ground-breaking insight into the molecular causes of Alzheimer's disease. He receives the prize of 60,000 euros from Piepenbrock and the German Centre for Neurodegenerative Diseases (DZNE).

Piepenbrock trainees are involved in the first trainee football tournament with great passion.

First trainee football tournament
Within the framework of the football European Championships 2016, Piepenbrock organises a trainee football tournament for the first time for its trainees and dual students. A total of 50 of them meet in Osnabrück to play in a football tournament against one another and interact. The highlight of the event is the final match "Beat the Boss", in which the trainees play against a team consisting of Piepenbrock business managers, branch managers and department chiefs. The tournament is also revived for the football World Cup 2018.

In Environment Week, numerous exhibitors set up in tents and pavilions in the park of Schloss Bellevue.

Participation in the "Environment Week"
Piepenbrock takes part in the forum "Environment Week" in the park of Bellevue Castle with a total of approximately 13,000 visitors, participants and exhibitors. In doing so, the company is accepting an invitation from President Joachim Gauck and the German Environment Foundation. The participants in the event concern themselves with environmental protection and sustainability issues as well as the associated economic and social opportunities to find solutions to global environmental questions.

The Osnabrück – Emsland – Bentheim county Chamber of Commerce and Industry gives Piepenbrock with the "Top Training Organisation" award. This honours Piepenbrock for its commitment to promoting new talent. Alongside imparting technical knowledge, the family company places particular value on factors such as team spirit, determination and motivation. The multi-stage application process beforehand comprised a comprehensive questionnaire, an analysis by the Chamber of Commerce and Industry training consultant and an audit in the company.

The senior professor at the University of Ulm is honoured for his ground-breaking insight in researching Alzheimer's and Parkinson's disease.

Together with the Heinrich Braun Clinic and various environmental associations, the building services provider establishes a butterfly meadow on the grounds of the Heinrich Braun Clinic. The area comprises a total of 17,000 square metres, providing a habitat for species of domestic butterfly and other insects.

The German private institute for sustainability and economy once again awards Piepenbrock the "Trusted Sustainability" seal of approval. This honours the holistic sustainability management of the family company.

The joint beehive of Piepenbrock and Caritas charity is located in the Magdalena Garden in Hildesheim.

Setting up beehives with Caritas
Together with the Caritas charity organisation, Piepenbrock expands its Germany-wide commitment to the preservation of bees. The aim is to set up more beehives in Caritas care and children's homes. This is intended to enhance the recovery and environmental awareness for residents as well as Caritas and Piepenbrock employees. This year, Piepenbrock and Caritas start up the first bee colony in the Magdalena Garden – near the Magdalenenhof Caritas care home for the elderly in Hildesheim.

5. "Hartwig Piepenbrock DZNE award"
Prof. Christian Haass is the award winner of the 5th "Hartwig Piepenbrock DZNE Prize". The prize of 60,000 euros is awarded by Piepenbrock and the German Centre for Neurodegenerative Diseases (DZNE). The professor at the Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich and spokesman for the Munich DZNE centre is honoured for his ground-breaking insight into proteins and immune reactions, with which he created the basic principles for new approaches in therapy and diagnosis of Alzheimer's disease.

Piepenbrock supports the trust foundation German Dementia Relief with an annual amount of money.

Patronage of the German Foundation for Dementia
Piepenbrock becomes an official patron of German Dementia Relief – DZNE foundation for brain and health. The company supports the foundation with 10,000 euros per year. Furthermore, Piepenbrock's executive partner Olaf Piepenbrock is a member of the foundation board. The foundation aims to promote and financially support research into neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer's and dementia.

Piepenbrock receives the "Axia Best Managed Companies Award". The annual competition is presented by the consultancy firm Deloitte, WirtschaftsWoche (business magazine) and the Confederation of German Industry. The application process consisted of an online questionnaire, a personal interview with company management and a written elaboration.

Piepenbrock receives the "TOP SERVICE Deutschland" seal of approval for the second time in a row. The competition run by the consultancy firm ServiceRating is based on an independent survey of more than 100 customers and the results of a management audit.

Piepenbrock implements the digital property folder with digital employment contracts and instruction documents. The folder contains all of the information relevant to providing services at the respective customer property. This replaces the numerous printed folders in the branch offices. It saves a large amount of paper.

Piepenbrock opens the new Piepenbrock Technology Centre, expanded to include more content and space. On an area of around 550 square metres, new cleaning methods, machines and materials are tested and employees are trained. A special feature of the new Technology Centre is the associated Clean Room Training Centre, which is virtually unique in the industry. In two replicated clean rooms, a personnel air lock as well as an area for hand disinfection, employees are trained comprehensively on every aspect of clean room cleaning.

Bicycle leasing is rolled out Germany-wide
The pilot project for bicycle leasing at the headquarters in Osnabrück was a complete success. Eighty-eight bicycles were leased. This meant that Piepenbrock rolled out the concept Germany-wide in 2020. Now employees in all branches can lease a bicycle or e-bike. Payment is effected in instalments per salary conversion. The package includes additional insurance services and, on request, regular inspections.
